Disarmco’s Thermal Shock Induced Deflagrators (TSID) are designed to neutralise High Explosive (HE) filled munitions. Rapid transfer of heat causes deflagration of the explosive in the target weapon leading to gas over pressure that bursts the casing without detonation.
The exposed explosive is ignited by the residual heat/flame from the molten thermite.
TSID minimises fragmentation, blast over-pressure and acoustic pollution by initiating rapid combustion of the munitions filling.
TSID units are designed to fit common ammunition profiles to ensure intimate contact but can be further contoured by the user where required. TSID is initiated using the Thermite Initiated Starter (TIS).
TSID Video
The video above shows the DISARMCO Thermal Shock Induced Deflagrator (TSID) being used by MAG Vietnam on a Mark 82 (Mk 82) 500 pounds (227kg) low-drag general-purpose bomb. The Thermal Shock Induced Deflagrators (TSID) are designed to neutralise High Explosive (HE) filled munitions. Rapid transfer of heat causes deflagration of the explosive in the target leading to gas over pressure that bursts the casing without a high order. The video shows a successful low order of the Mark 82 bomb.

Applications
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
The reduction of collateral damage and environmental impact are often significant considerations in EOD team missions. TSID units offer a neutralisation option as a Low Order Technique where the risk of detonation is reduced significantly.
Demilitarisation
The decommissioning of ammunition is an international challenge especially in the area of HE filled munitions. Open detonation has become increasingly difficult due to environmental pressures and other constraints. TSID offers a useful alternative to the standard HE countermine charge.
Advantages
- Reduced fragmentation hazard
- Reduced blast over-pressure
- Reliable against a wide range of military High Explosive fillings
- Safe to store and transport
- Quick and Simple to deploy
- Under UN/NATO explosive regulations, TSID units, without igniters, are not classified as explosive items therefore transportation procedures are significantly simplified.
Further information
The following standard TSID units are currently available to deal with the following types of HE filled munitions:
Type A – 155x80x100mmx R52mm – for 105mm shells
Type B1 – 180x125x135mm x R76mm – for 152 – 155mm shells
Type C – 250x165x95mmx R176mm – used on MK 82
TSID units can be custom manufactured for specific applications.
